Do you remember when I said I was going to be attending Camp Duke over the summer?
Camp Duke is a camp for incoming freshman here at SWOSU! You stay on campus and have fun activities all week. It’s really early mornings, but even later nights. Orientation Leaders (OL) are in charge of Camp Duke, these are older students who may or may not have attending Camp, but ultimately love Southwestern. After camp was over, I went home and told my parents I wanted to be an OL, not really knowing much about them. I just really loved how welcomed I felt by them, and honestly without Camp Duke I don’t think I would love this school so much. The OL’s all teach a 6 week course, Freshman Orientation, to help freshman adjust and get comfortable here. I knew after those 6 weeks this truly was something to pursue.
A few days went by and I decided to fill out the application, not thinking I would hear back. A few weeks later I received and email asking me to sign up for an interview! So, that’s what I did. I signed up for the first spot on the next Monday, for the two hour interview. After the interview, I had mixed feelings. I really loved getting to know everyone and had a blast, but I didn’t feel overly confident in myself. I thought about every interview question and what I should’ve said differently or what I should’ve added. I was so nervous because this is something I had been interested in since the summer!
I came home for fall break and I was sitting at the Joy In The Cause office when I got an email from the director.. I was a nervous wreck. I knew it was the day I should’ve heard back, one way or another. I knew I didn’t get the position so I ignored the email, not wanting it to ruin my day. A few minutes, maybe 5 went by, and I was anxious. My heart was beating fast, my hands were sweating, so I opened the email… After reading the first two sentences, I didn’t know what to think. My heart was beating even harder..
I did it! I got the job! I can’t wait to meet the other OL’s, and our upcoming freshman!
This may not be big news for some, but it was for me and my family. Each day, I realized why this is the best place for me to be right now. I love my school, I love the people, and I can’t wait to start this journey!
